Abdukodir Khusanov signs new contract with Manchester City

Manchester City has announced that Abdukodir Khusanov, the Uzbek international defender, has signed a new contract with the club. The new deal extends his stay until the summer of 2031.
Khusanov joined Manchester City in January 2025 and has since become a key player. During the 2025/26 season, he formed a central defensive partnership with Marc Guéhi in the latter half of the campaign. He featured in 16 of the team’s last 19 Premier League games and played significant roles in the successful FA Cup and League Cup finals.
Player Development and Impact
The 22-year-old defender has played 47 games in his City career. His speed and tackling abilities have established him as a notable young talent in the Premier League and a favourite among supporters at the Etihad Stadium. Khusanov was also among the final three nominees for the 2025/26 Etihad Player of the Season award.
Beyond his club contributions, Khusanov was instrumental in his home country, Uzbekistan, qualifying for their first ever World Cup. His development has been recognised by the club, leading to this new contract.
Upon signing, Khusanov expressed his happiness to extend his time at City, stating he has enjoyed his time in Manchester and feels he is growing as a player. He also mentioned his determination to impress manager Enzo Maresca and his staff to secure a regular place in the team.
Director of Football Hugo Viana commented on Khusanov’s progress, highlighting his growth into a skilled defender. Viana noted Khusanov’s physical and technical attributes, suggesting he possesses the qualities to become a world-class centre-back. He also emphasised that at his age, Khusanov’s best years are ahead, and his potential for further improvement is evident.
Khusanov’s arrival in January 2025 marked him as the first Uzbek player to compete in the Premier League. Initially, few fans were familiar with him, especially considering he had been playing in Belarus less than two years prior. Despite a challenging debut, he made five additional Premier League appearances in the 2024/25 season, including victories against Newcastle and Spurs.
His significant impact became particularly apparent in the second half of the most recent season. After injuries sidelined Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol in the same match, Khusanov stepped into a more prominent role. He participated in all but three of the remaining Premier League fixtures, and played in FA Cup victories over Newcastle, Liverpool, and Chelsea. He also played every minute of the League Cup from the quarter-finals onwards.
His pace has allowed City to maintain a high defensive line, with the understanding that he could outpace opponents in a foot race if possession was lost. This ability has made him a crowd favourite, with fans often chanting his name.
Club’s Strategy for Player Retention
The new contract for Khusanov is part of a broader strategy by Manchester City to secure their key players. This approach follows a situation involving Spain’s Rodri, who is reportedly close to joining Real Madrid after entering the final year of his contract and declining renewal offers.
This development appears to have prompted a shift in policy at the Etihad Stadium, with the club now prioritising early contract extensions for players considered vital to the team’s future. The aim is to prevent players from reaching the final year of their deals, which could give rival clubs an opportunity to sign them.
Khusanov’s contract extension comes shortly after City announced a new deal for English player Phil Foden. Reports also indicate that the club is working on new contracts for Belgium’s Jeremy Doku and Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol, as part of a comprehensive plan to retain their prominent stars and deter attempts by other clubs to acquire them. This proactive stance reflects Manchester City‘s desire to avoid similar situations to the one experienced with Rodri.
