Arsenal Finalise £55m Deal for Ezri Konsa

Ezri Konsa: Arsenal complete £55m deal for Aston Villa and England defender

Arsenal have finalised a £55m deal to acquire defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa. The England international has agreed to a four-year contract, which includes an option for an additional 12 months, following a successful medical examination. The transfer involves a fixed fee of £51m, with a potential £4m in add-ons.

Konsa expressed his pride in joining the club, stating, “It’s a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world.” He added that he is eager to continue winning and is committed to bringing further success to the club.

Konsa’s Role and Impact

The defender is now eligible to make his debut for Arsenal against his former club, Aston Villa, at Villa Park on August 31. His arrival provides additional defensive depth for the Premier League champions, particularly as William Saliba is out for an extended period and Jurrien Timber is sidelined with a long-term groin issue.

Arsenal‘s sporting director, Andrea Berta, highlighted Konsa’s qualities, describing him as a defender of high quality with athleticism, composure, and tactical intelligence. Berta noted Konsa’s versatility, being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, which will contribute to the squad’s defensive standards.

Konsa is the fifth major summer signing for Arsenal, following the permanent transfer of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen and the additions of Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimaraes. The club had previously considered Bayer Leverkusen‘s Jarell Quansah, who represented England alongside Konsa at this summer’s World Cup.

Villa’s Financial Context and Player Departures

Aston Villa had initially sought £60m for Konsa, but a compromise was reached with Arsenal. Konsa made 286 appearances for Villa since joining in July 2019 from Brentford. He was part of the squad that won the Europa League in May, marking the club’s first European trophy since 1982.

Last season, Konsa scored two goals and provided one assist in 48 appearances as Unai Emery‘s team secured Champions League football with a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. He also participated in every England game during the World Cup, where the national team reached the semi-finals and secured a bronze medal.

Konsa’s departure is one of several high-profile exits from Villa Park this summer. These changes are partly influenced by UEFA‘s squad cost ratio (SCR) regulations, which limit spending on player and staff wages, transfer fees, and agent fees to 70% of football-related revenue. Villa has faced fines from UEFA for past breaches, including a £9.5m sanction last year and a £19.4m fine in June, with £12.9m suspended.

The club’s financial situation is also affected by the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which cap financial losses at a maximum of £105m over a rolling three-year period. While Villa reported a post-tax profit of £17m for the period ending June 30, 2025, their previous two years showed losses of £119.6m in 2023 and £85.4m in 2024. The SCR regulations have now replaced PSR, aligning the Premier League with UEFA‘s model.

Other notable departures from Aston Villa include Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers. Lucas Digne was also transferred to Paris St-Germain. The club is also addressing the situation with goalkeeper Emi Martinez after his move to Juventus did not materialise and the signing of Zion Suzuki as his replacement.

Al-Hilal may also make another attempt to sign Ollie Watkins before the September 1 transfer deadline, with Villa reportedly offering a new contract to retain the striker.
