Arsenal prepares for Community Shield clash against Manchester City in Cardiff

Go Inside Training ahead of the Community Shield

Arsenal is preparing to face Manchester City in the 2026/27 Community Shield on Sunday, August 16. The match will take place at the Millennium Stadium, also known as the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff. This marks the first time in 20 years that the traditional curtain-raiser for the English football season will be held in the Welsh capital.

The decision to move the fixture from its usual venue, Wembley Stadium, was made because music star The Weeknd’s “After Hours Til Dawn” tour is scheduled at Wembley on the same day as the Community Shield. This will be only the third Community Shield played away from Wembley since the stadium reopened in 2007.

The Community Shield has historically been staged at Wembley since 1974, but it has moved to other venues on several occasions. Between 2001 and 2006, the match was played at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium while the new Wembley was under construction. The fixture returned to Wembley in 2007 and remained there for most editions, with two exceptions before this year’s return to Cardiff.

In 2012, Manchester City and Chelsea played the Community Shield at Villa Park, the home of Aston Villa, due to the Olympic Games being held in London. A decade later, in 2022, the fixture was again moved away from Wembley when Manchester City faced Liverpool at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium because Wembley was hosting the Women’s European Championship final.

The 2026 edition will bring the competition back to Cardiff, a city that hosted the Community Shield for six consecutive years during Wembley’s redevelopment. The Principality Stadium will therefore host Arsenal and Manchester City for the latest edition of a fixture that has been played at various venues throughout its history.

Squad Updates and Injury Report

Ahead of the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta provided an update on his squad, confirming that key players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are available for selection. Arteta stated that both players trained with the team and are expected to be involved if they meet the expected condition. New signing Martin Zubimendi is also in contention.

However, the defensive line faces some challenges. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba will both miss the clash as they continue their rehabilitation. Saliba’s injury is described as a “long-term injury.” Timber’s situation is more optimistic, with Arteta noting that he is progressing well and is on the pitch. The club is taking a cautious approach with Timber’s recovery to prevent setbacks, with his return to full group training anticipated in the coming weeks.

Arteta elaborated on Timber’s recovery, stating that the next seven to ten days will be crucial as he begins to integrate back with his teammates on the grass. The manager emphasized the importance of ensuring every step in his recovery is correct, given his significance to the team.

Manager’s Ambitions and Training Preparations

Mikel Arteta will be looking to continue his strong record in the Community Shield. He has won the competition on all six occasions he has competed in it as a player, coach, and manager. Arsenal enters this campaign as the reigning Premier League champions, having secured their first league title in 20 years last season. They will face Manchester City, who are the current FA Cup and League Cup winners.

The team has been conducting training sessions at the Sobha Realty Training Centre in preparation for the upcoming fixture. Arteta also addressed the club’s transfer ambitions, indicating a desire to continue evolving the squad to achieve their goals, without discussing specific names.

The Community Shield match between Arsenal and Manchester City is scheduled for Sunday, August 16.
