Arsenal agrees to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51m

Why are Arsenal signing Konsa and how strong could the Gunners be?

Arsenal has reached an agreement to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for a fee of £51m. The Premier League champions are bolstering their defensive options following injuries to key players.

Konsa, 28, is expected to join the Gunners as they look to defend their league title. This transfer follows earlier acquisitions of Bruno Guimaraes for £75m and Christos Tzolis for £34m, bringing Arsenal’s summer spending to over £150m.

Defensive Reinforcements Needed

The move for Konsa comes as Arsenal faces significant defensive absences. William Saliba has been ruled out for an extended period due to a long-term back issue, which also cut short his World Cup participation with France. Additionally, Jurrien Timber, the club’s primary right-back, is sidelined for the initial weeks of the season with a groin problem that led to his withdrawal from the Netherlands World Cup squad.

These injuries leave Ben White, who has had his own fitness concerns, as Arsenal’s only fit right-back. Cristhian Mosquera, a 21-year-old, is currently the sole right-sided centre-back available to partner Gabriel Magalhaes. Manager Mikel Arteta reportedly prefers not to field two left-footed players at centre-back, a situation that could arise if White were to get injured and Mosquera had to shift to right-back.

Arsenal had also made Piero Hincapie’s loan deal permanent this summer, but both he and Riccardo Calafiori, preferred at left-back, are left-sided. The club also has 16-year-old academy defender Marli Salmon, though he is likely to be used sparingly in cup competitions.

Before pursuing Konsa, Arsenal had considered Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, who can play both at right-back and as a right-sided centre-back. Konsa’s profile, capable of covering both right-back and centre-back roles, aligns with Arsenal’s needs.

Konsa’s Performance and Role

Konsa’s Premier League statistics from last season highlight why Arsenal was keen on his signing. He recorded the best ground duel success rate among all defenders in the league at 73.1% and also boasted the best passing accuracy at 95%. His passing accuracy was the highest among all players in the league, and he ranked first among outfield players who contested more than 20 ground duels.

Furthermore, Konsa ranked fifth among all defenders for ball carries exceeding five metres. He maintained his impressive passing accuracy during his seven starts in the World Cup, achieving a 97% pass completion rate. He also lifted the Europa League with Villa last season and started seven of England’s eight World Cup games.

Arteta aims to build a squad with significant depth to avoid the injury issues that plagued Arsenal last season, during which they played 63 games across all competitions. The Gunners won the title, reached the Champions League final, the Carabao Cup final, and the FA Cup quarter-final.

When asked about the ideal squad size, Arteta mentioned considering variables such as player ability, history, injury records, and versatility. He aims for a balance of competition and cooperation within the team.

Aston Villa’s Defensive Plans

Aston Villa had initially sought £60m for Konsa but ultimately compromised on the £51m fee. With Konsa’s departure, Villa is looking for replacements, with Fikayo Tomori of AC Milan and Tosin Adarabioyo of Chelsea reportedly on their list of potential targets.

Tomori is said to be open to a move to Villa Park. He joined AC Milan on loan in January 2021 before making the move permanent. Since then, he has made 214 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and providing six assists. He helped AC Milan win the Serie A title in 2021-22 and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2024-25.

Villa’s interest in Tomori coincides with a period of transition at AC Milan, where Ruben Amorim has taken charge this summer. Milan could seek a fee between €10-15m for Tomori. Villa has been active in the transfer market, having already signed Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, Matteo Ruggeri, and Zion Suzuki.

Konsa missed the Thursday midday deadline to be registered for Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry on Friday night. His potential Premier League debut for Arsenal could be against Aston Villa on August 31.
