Arteta provides fitness updates on Timber, Mosquera, and Saliba ahead of Chelsea clash

Mikel Arteta has offered updates on the fitness of several Arsenal players as the team prepares for their Premier League encounter against Chelsea on Sunday. The Gunners return to their home ground following consecutive league victories over Coventry City and Aston Villa, setting the stage for a London derby against Xabi Alonso’s side at Emirates Stadium.
Bruno Guimaraes, who made his Premier League debut for Arsenal at Villa Park, sustained a knock in the previous game. Arteta confirmed that the midfielder is currently being assessed. “[Bruno] had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he’s being assessed,” Arteta stated, adding, “Hopefully [Saturday], he will be okay for training.” Guimaraes’s absence from a training session held at London Colney on Thursday had raised questions about his availability for the weekend fixture. The Brazilian midfielder, a summer signing from Newcastle United, has been managing a persistent groin issue, which led him to miss the season opener against Coventry City before making a brief 19-minute appearance off the bench against Aston Villa.
The club is reportedly taking a cautious approach with Guimaraes’s workload since his arrival. Despite the depth in midfield options, losing a player of his quality for a significant fixture like a London derby against Chelsea could impact the team’s tactical fluidity.
Defensive Player Updates
Regarding Cristhian Mosquera, who was replaced by Ezri Konsa during the match against Aston Villa due to an injury, Arteta indicated that it was primarily a precautionary measure. “For Cristhian, it was more precaution than anything else, so we’ll have to see in the session [Saturday] how he feels,” the manager explained. Mosquera’s absence from Thursday’s training session was also noted. If the Spanish defender is deemed unfit for Sunday’s match, it could pave the way for Ezri Konsa to make his full home debut at the Emirates. Konsa, who joined from Aston Villa last month, is considered a natural choice to fill in the defensive line.
Jurrien Timber’s recovery is progressing well, with Arteta noting that he is in a “really good place.” Timber has been training with the team for several weeks and participated in full training alongside his teammates. Arteta mentioned that a decision on his involvement on Sunday would be made after Saturday’s training session. “Jurrien is in really good condition at the moment, he’s been a few weeks on the pitch and has been training with us, so he’s in a really good place. We will decide [on his involvement on Sunday] after training [on Saturday],” Arteta confirmed.
William Saliba is also continuing his path to fitness. He has been included in Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League squad, making him eligible for the upcoming league phase fixtures. However, the exact timeline for Saliba’s return is not yet clear. Arteta stated, “We don’t really know the amount of weeks Wilo is going to be out because it’s about a healing process and everything is a bit different – we know we have to respect certain timings.” He added that Saliba’s progression has been positive in recent weeks, but the team needs to monitor how his injury reacts once more load is applied.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have had strong starts to the new Premier League season, securing back-to-back victories in their initial two fixtures. Arsenal began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Coventry City, followed by a 1-0 victory against Aston Villa. Chelsea recorded a 3-2 win against Fulham and a 4-3 victory over Brighton.
Upcoming London Derby
The upcoming match against Chelsea represents a significant test for Arsenal as they aim to maintain their perfect start to the new Premier League campaign. The defensive concerns, particularly with Saliba sidelined for an extended period, are testing Arteta’s squad depth early in the season. The decision on the involvement of players like Guimaraes, Mosquera, and Timber will be crucial for the team’s strategy in the London derby on Sunday.
The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday.
