Nigeria international Benjamin Fredrick promoted to Brentford’s first-team squad and signs new contract

Benjamin Fredrick, the Nigeria international defender, has been promoted to Brentford‘s first-team squad. The 21-year-old has also signed a new four-year contract, which includes an option for the club to extend it by an additional year. This development comes as Fredrick links up with Keith Andrews‘ squad for pre-season training.

Head coach Andrews expressed satisfaction with Fredrick’s new deal, highlighting the club’s belief in his potential. Andrews noted Fredrick’s experience in senior international football, where he played a significant role in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign. The immediate focus for Fredrick is to consistently integrate into the squad, especially after a knee injury prematurely ended his loan spell in Belgium.

Andrews mentioned that Fredrick’s last game was in mid-November, indicating a considerable period he has spent recovering from injury. The coach’s aim is for Fredrick to challenge his teammates and demonstrate his abilities within the first-team environment.

Pathway to the First Team

Fredrick’s journey to the first team began at Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna. He played for Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC during the 2021/22 season before moving to Nasarawa United in Nigeria’s top flight. During his time at Nasarawa United, he featured as both a centre-back and right-back.

He also represented Nigeria at the Under-20s Africa Cup of Nations, where the national team secured a third-place finish. Fredrick initially joined Brentford B on loan in August 2023. His performances under Neil MacFarlane led to him being named on the bench for two Premier League games and two FA Cup ties.

Brentford made his move permanent in April 2024. Fredrick continued to excel in the 2024/25 season, featuring in two more Premier League matchday squads. He also played a crucial role as the Young Bees reached the Premier League Cup final and won the Under-21 Professional Development League national title.

In May 2025, Fredrick was named Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year. Later that month, he made his senior international debut for Nigeria in a penalty shoot-out victory against Jamaica in the Unity Cup final at Gtech Community Stadium.

For the 2025/26 campaign, Fredrick was loaned to FCV Dender, where he made 15 appearances across the Belgian Pro League and Croky Cup before a knee injury cut his loan spell short.

International and Club Ambitions

Fredrick’s international experience extends to starting the final four matches of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group during the September, October, and November international breaks. He also started in Nigeria’s win against Gabon in the African play-off semi-final, though Nigeria was later defeated by DR Congo in the final following a penalty shoot-out.

Sam Saunders, the B team head coach, praised Fredrick’s progression, character, and coachability. Saunders highlighted Fredrick’s strong attributes in one-on-one defending and his continuous improvement, noting his proven ability to perform at the international level.

Fredrick expressed his happiness and pride after signing his new contract and being promoted. He acknowledged the club’s support, particularly from Neil MacFarlane, who he credits with helping him develop as both a player and a person since his initial loan move in August 2023.

Looking ahead, Fredrick stated his ambition to keep pushing and learning daily. His primary goals for the upcoming season include making his debut with the first team and securing minutes in the Premier League, aiming to perform his best when given the opportunity.
