Bruno Guimaraes eyes Arsenal move as Newcastle consider future

Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle
Bruno Guimaraes has communicated his desire to explore an opportunity with Arsenal if a suitable offer is made to Newcastle. This preference is reportedly driven by footballing ambitions rather than financial considerations, despite him being Newcastle’s highest earner. He is said to believe that winning titles may not be achievable at Newcastle in the near future and wishes to pursue that goal elsewhere.
The midfielder, who turns 29 later this year, has not submitted a transfer request. However, he has directly informed Newcastle of his interest in joining Arsenal should an acceptable bid materialise. He also wants to ensure that Newcastle receives a substantial fee if he departs.
Reports suggest that a transfer fee around £80m would be the tipping point for Newcastle to consider selling. However, Arsenal has not yet made any direct contact with Newcastle regarding his availability. The discussions surrounding his potential move have primarily been driven through agents, leaving Newcastle without a concrete offer to address.
Transfer market activity
Newcastle has already seen significant changes this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali having moved to Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively. The club is keen to retain Guimaraes and views him as not for sale unless their valuation is met.
In other transfer news, Newcastle had an agreement in place to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £49m. A verbal agreement was reached with Freiburg, and the player also verbally agreed to personal terms. However, Aston Villa later matched the agreed fee, and Manzambi’s preference is understood to be Villa, reportedly due to the offer of Champions League football.

Newcastle is also looking to make additional signings, with expectations of bringing in three or four more players. This includes a potential new midfielder if Guimaraes leaves, a number one goalkeeper, and a full-back capable of playing on either side, preferably left-back. There is a long-standing interest in Manchester City’s James Trafford for the goalkeeper position.
The club’s new transfer policy focuses on signing players between 18 and 24 years old, generally within a price range of £20m to £40m. While they are willing to slightly exceed this for specific targets, such as the £49m for Manzambi, they are not expected to spend significantly higher amounts like £80m or £90m on a single player. This approach aims to bring in younger players with high potential who can be developed by Eddie Howe.
Squad changes and managerial outlook
Several players could also depart Newcastle this summer. Nick Pope is expected to leave, although interest from Ipswich has reportedly subsided. There is also a possibility of Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock moving on. While no offers are currently on the table for these players, Newcastle would be open to their departures to facilitate a squad overhaul.
The manager, Eddie Howe, is reportedly aligned with the club’s new transfer strategy, which prioritises younger, more affordable talent. This model is seen as an opportunity for Howe to develop players on the training ground. The absence of European football next season is also viewed as an advantage, allowing for more training sessions and less pressure on the squad.

Sean Steur, an 18-year-old signing, is considered a long-term prospect and is not expected to immediately feature in the starting lineup. He will train with the first team and be given opportunities to integrate into the squad over time. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle, providing assurance regarding the club’s financial backing.
In other transfer news, Manchester United has signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a £35m deal, with the player signing a five-year contract. Leandro Trossard is also set to join Besiktas from Arsenal, pending a medical examination.
