Chelsea’s defensive struggles questioned after 2-1 defeat to Arsenal

Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea: Gary Neville questions Chelsea's 'all over the place' back three after defeat - but is confident they can finish top three

Chelsea suffered their first defeat under new manager Xabi Alonso, losing 2-1 to Arsenal in a recent Premier League fixture. Despite an early lead, the team’s defensive performance drew criticism, particularly from analyst Gary Neville, who described their back three as “all over the place.”

The match saw Morgan Rogers score for Chelsea within the first two minutes. However, Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, responded with goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard to secure the victory. This result leaves Chelsea with a record of 2-0-1 in the early season.

Neville, speaking on his podcast, highlighted concerns about Chelsea’s defensive unit. He compared their current back three to the strong defensive partnerships he had observed in the past, such as the Juventus and Italy back three featuring Andrea Barzagli, Leonard Bonnuci, and Giorgio Chiellini. Neville noted that those players worked cohesively, understood positioning, were effective in aerial duels, and organised the players in front of them.

In contrast, Neville suggested that Chelsea’s defenders did not appear solid and lacked connection, stating, “It’s almost like their legs aren’t connected to their hips and the hips aren’t connected to their bodies.” He believes that Chelsea may need to recruit more defensive players over the next year or two to achieve a more stable back three.

Alonso’s Perspective and Defensive Challenges

Alonso acknowledged the need for defensive improvements, stating that his priority is to win games, which typically involves conceding fewer goals. He admitted that the team needs to be “tighter, more clinical, more balanced,” but stressed that developing this solidity will require time, given he only took on the managerial role in May.

The Chelsea manager expressed disappointment with the loss, noting that “a defeat has to hurt.” He highlighted moments in the game where Chelsea struggled to maintain control, particularly after scoring first, when Arsenal pushed them hard for about 15-20 minutes. Alonso also conceded that his team “could’ve done a little bit better” on Arsenal’s second goal.

Despite the defeat, Alonso praised his team’s fighting spirit and desire. He mentioned that Chelsea continued to push for an equaliser, with Pedro Neto hitting the post and Estevao Willian being denied by goalkeeper David Raya late in the game. Alonso views the defeat as something that needs to “hurt in a positive way” as it is only the third game of the season, with many more to play.

Chelsea has now conceded seven goals in their first three Premier League matches. Alonso emphasised that while the result was not ideal, he was pleased with the spirit and attitude shown by his players, who he felt worked hard throughout the match. He believes the team is in a new phase and is focused on competing at the highest level.

Squad Concerns and Future Outlook

Alonso also addressed questions regarding injuries, specifically the absence of Moises Caicedo, who missed the trip to Arsenal after being forced off in the previous match against Brighton & Hove Albion. Alonso confirmed that Caicedo’s injury is “not long-term” but indicated that he might have been rushed back too soon in the prior game. He stated, “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

The manager chose not to attribute the loss solely to missing players like Caicedo and Levi Colwill, acknowledging that injuries and suspensions are a normal part of football. However, he also noted that having these “top players” available makes Chelsea a better team. Alonso expressed full belief in the players currently available, stating they gave their best.

Despite the defensive issues, Gary Neville remains optimistic about Chelsea’s season. He praised other aspects of the team, including wing-backs Pedro Neto and Jorell Hato, and highlighted their strong midfield and forward line, provided key players stay fit. Neville believes that Chelsea will finish at least third in the Premier League and could potentially aim for second place. He stated, “I’m as positive as I have been for three four five years about Chelsea because I think they’re going in the right direction.”

Alonso concluded by reiterating the long-term nature of the project at Chelsea, stating, “It’s game three and this is going to be a long, long race.”
