Cristian Romero open to Arsenal move, but Tottenham remain firm against North London transfer

Romero’s Potential Departures
Cristian Romero, the Tottenham defender, is reportedly open to a move to Arsenal this summer. However, Tottenham is adamant that their player will not transfer to their North London rivals. Despite this stance, Romero, 28, appears receptive to leaving Tottenham, and the club has shown a willingness to consider offers for his services.
Inter Milan previously made a strong move for the Argentine, with their sporting director publicly acknowledging attempts to reach an agreement. Romero signed a new four-year deal with Spurs last August and is anticipated to depart the club this summer. Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi recently stated he would respect players’ wishes if they desired to leave.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s Interest
Barcelona has re-entered the race for Romero, especially after the departure of Ronald Araujo to Liverpool. The Catalan club had a verbal agreement with Liverpool for a season-long loan with a purchase option for Araujo. This development prompted Barcelona‘s sporting director, Deco, to reassess defensive options, with Romero quickly becoming a primary target.
According to reports, Barcelona has long admired Romero for his physical strength, leadership qualities, and ability to defend high up the pitch under pressure. While Romero was already on Barcelona‘s shortlist, Araujo‘s exit escalated their interest into a potential deal. However, finances remain a significant hurdle for Barcelona, which previously favoured a loan over an expensive permanent transfer.
Atletico Madrid also stands out as a prominent competitor for Romero‘s signature. Atletico has tracked Romero for an extended period and renewed their interest this transfer window after a previous attempt failed due to Tottenham‘s financial demands. Recent weeks have seen progress in Atletico‘s contact with the player, with reports suggesting the Spanish club initiated direct talks with Tottenham after an initial understanding on personal terms with Romero.
Barcelona‘s strong entry into the deal could alter the situation, as it previously appeared Atletico had almost secured the move. Barcelona believes Romero offers elite experience, a leader’s personality, and a robust style, potentially making him an ideal partner for young talents in their defensive line, such as Pau Cubarsi.

Managerial Perspectives and Other Targets
Despite Deco‘s desire to explore the market following Araujo‘s departure, Barcelona‘s coach, Hansi Flick, has shown hesitation regarding the necessity of signing a new defender. Flick‘s approach involves trusting young players and utilising existing squad solutions. Cubarsi leads the defensive options, with Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martin, and Alvaro Cortes also capable of playing at centre-back.
Therefore, signing a new defender is not a guaranteed outcome for Barcelona, even with Araujo‘s exit freeing up salary space once Liverpool covers his wages. Romero is not the only target for Barcelona, as they continue to evaluate other names to strengthen their defence, including Spanish player Aymeric Laporte. Laporte, a left-footed defender, offers a different advantage that is valued by the coaching staff. He returned to Athletic Bilbao last summer from Al-Nassr, and his contract extends until 2028.
In other transfer news, Arsenal is reportedly eyeing a move for Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz after their bid for Vinicius Junior was unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Everton and Crystal Palace are discussing a potential swap deal involving Dwight McNeil and Brennan Johnson. Barcelona is also confident of reaching a compromise agreement with Manchester City for Rodri, valued at £68m, and is preparing a revised bid.
Tottenham‘s own defensive situation sees fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven close to agreeing a new five-year deal with the club.
