Manchester United Lead Race for Manu Kone

Manchester United are reportedly leading Arsenal in the race to sign French midfielder Manu Kone. The 25-year-old has emerged as a key target for United as they aim to strengthen their midfield options following the 2026 World Cup.
Kone, who has spent two seasons in Serie A, is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League, viewing England as his preferred destination. During his time in Italy, he made 82 appearances and contributed to Roma’s third-place finish in the league, where the club accumulated 73 points.
While Arsenal remain interested in Kone, having been linked with him for several months, United are believed to have an advantage in negotiations. Reports indicate that Kone is a top priority for the Old Trafford club and is open to a transfer to the north of England.
Transfer Interest Intensifies
United are reportedly taking a measured approach to the deal, carefully assessing the potential operation to avoid overpaying for the French international. Kone features prominently on United’s shortlist of midfield targets, and he would reportedly welcome a move to the north-west of England.
Despite United’s careful approach, Kone is said to prefer a swift resolution to his future. This sentiment has been echoed by Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini.
Beyond United and Arsenal, two other unnamed Premier League clubs have also expressed interest in Kone. This widespread attention highlights his growing reputation, particularly after earning 19 caps for Les Bleus and his performance during France’s run to the World Cup semi-finals this summer.
Kone was visibly emotional after France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals, an image that became a notable moment of the tournament for the national team. Following a period of recovery, Kone is now focused on his professional future.

Competition from Other Clubs
Chelsea have also reportedly made enquiries to Roma regarding Kone’s availability. The London club is assessing its midfield options after Andrey Santos’ move to Old Trafford. Chelsea’s recruitment team is considering several candidates, with Kone being one of the names discussed internally.
Sources suggest that Chelsea’s enquiries occurred during ongoing negotiations between BlueCo and Roma for other deals, including a potential permanent sale of winger Diego Moreira to Roma and a loan move for Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The strong working relationship between the two clubs is believed to facilitate these conversations.
Roma is reportedly prepared to sell Kone to generate significant funds for squad restructuring as they prepare for their return to the Champions League. The Italian side would consider offers in the region of £50 million for the midfielder, who joined from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2024.
United have already completed deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans but are still seeking another defensive-minded midfielder. Kone remains one of several players under consideration, alongside Wolves’ Joao Gomes, Fulham’s Sander Berge, and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The battle for Kone is expected to intensify, with neither United nor Chelsea having submitted a formal offer yet. Both clubs are conducting detailed evaluations of the player. One report suggests that Roma’s asking price for Kone could be around €60 million, a figure that Aston Villa, also interested, might be more inclined to meet after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a record British transfer fee.
Meanwhile, United have been active in the transfer market, confirming the £50 million arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and a deal for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow also joined on a free transfer, and the arrival of Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur was confirmed.
The situation surrounding Marcus Rashford remains unresolved as he prepares to return to Carrington for pre-season next month.
