United’s Pursuit of Baleba

United’s Pursuit of Baleba
Manchester United are reportedly nearing a full agreement to acquire midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion. The deal is understood to be worth in excess of £60m, with a five-year contract prepared for the Cameroon international upon formal conclusion of the transfer. Baleba is expected to travel to Manchester for a medical examination.
United had previously attempted to sign Baleba last summer but were deterred by Brighton’s valuation, which exceeded £100m. However, the asking price has since decreased. Following an unsuccessful pursuit of Matheus Fernandes earlier this summer, United revisited their interest in Baleba. Their initial offer of £60m is below Brighton’s current valuation, but discussions are ongoing.
The 22-year-old midfielder is currently recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained during a pre-season training camp in Austria. This injury is not anticipated to result in a prolonged absence. Baleba is expected to be sidelined for another two to three weeks.
Midfield Reinforcements and Baleba’s Role
Baleba would mark United’s third midfield addition this summer, following the arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48m and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m in July. Midfield has been a key focus area for United in the current transfer window.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and has made 112 appearances for the club. Last season, he featured 35 times for Brighton. He was absent for a period while representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. United’s interest in Baleba dates back to last autumn, with an enquiry made during the January transfer window.
Analysis suggests that Baleba’s playing style aligns with United’s needs for greater authority in midfield and a player capable of winning the ball back in deeper areas. His athleticism, aggression, and ability to carry the ball through midfield could provide a missing dynamism. While Santos and Tielemans are considered astute additions, Baleba offers specialist defensive capabilities combined with the athleticism to advance the team up the pitch.
Performance and Expectations
Baleba’s form for Brighton last season was described as underwhelming, which contributed to the reduction in his transfer fee. This indicated a dip in his performance and value to Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, in a campaign where Brighton secured European football for only the second time in their history.
Despite an inconsistent season, there is a belief that Baleba, at 22, has the potential to develop into a top midfielder. His influences include Paul Pogba, Yaya Toure, and Andres Iniesta, with a desire for self-expression in his game. United’s pursuit last summer was thought to have affected his form at Brighton, though Brighton sources did not believe this was the case. He regained confidence while playing for Cameroon, where he was viewed as having a positive tournament across five matches.
United rate Baleba’s metrics for ground coverage, possession-winning, and passing as a good fit for the squad. Given his left-footedness, he could also potentially offer cover at left-back. Brighton’s squad is scheduled to travel to Norway on Wednesday for Thursday’s Uefa Conference League play-off first-leg match against Tromso.
