Mohamed Salah Shines in Trabzonspor Debut

Trabzonspor 2-1 Istanbul Basaksehir: Mohamed Salah scores twice for new club

Mohamed Salah scored two goals in his first Turkish Super Lig start for Trabzonspor, contributing to their win against Istanbul Basaksehir. The Egyptian forward, who joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer from Liverpool this summer, nearly secured a hat-trick in the match.

Salah’s move to Trabzonspor involved a two-year deal, with reports indicating he earns £280,000 per week. This appearance marked his third for the Turkish club, having previously featured as a substitute against Kasimpasa and started in their Europa League play-off first-leg defeat to Ferencvaros.

Salah’s Impact on the Pitch

Salah opened his scoring for Trabzonspor by dispossessing Istanbul Basaksehir goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer and finding the net with a shot that deflected and went in off the inside of the post. After Eldor Shomurodov equalised for Istanbul Basaksehir from a penalty, Salah restored Trabzonspor’s lead with a first-time finish from approximately 10 yards out.

Towards the end of the match, Salah was shown a yellow card for diving inside the penalty area with 11 minutes remaining. In injury time, he believed he had completed his hat-trick when he scored into an empty net from 45 yards, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The Transfer Behind the Debut

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan described Salah’s acquisition as a significant project for the club. Dogan highlighted Salah’s status as a prominent Muslim footballer and an influential role model. The signing ceremony took place in front of about 35,000 supporters at Papara Park, where Salah signed his two-year contract.

Dogan explained that the club convinced Salah to join by emphasizing the unique identity of the city of Trabzon and its strong connection with the club. He noted that Trabzon, situated on the Black Sea coast near the Georgian border, is a city of around 800,000 residents, and Trabzonspor is its sole professional club.

The club president, who took over in 2023, aims to establish Trabzonspor and Trabzon as a preferred destination for talented young players globally. This strategy involves developing young talents for potential moves to larger European clubs, while also retaining experienced stars like Salah who can make an immediate impact.

Financial and Fan Engagement

Financially, Salah is set to earn an annual salary of 17 million euros, in addition to 20% of revenues from sales of products bearing his name. Dogan acknowledged that the deal might not generate a direct financial return in itself but pointed to other benefits.

The announcement of Salah’s signing led to an increase in season ticket prices. Dogan revealed that season ticket sales within the first four to five days after the announcement covered approximately 70% of Salah’s annual salary. The club, which initially aimed for 25,000 season tickets, now anticipates exceeding 30,000 sales, with major companies engaging in discussions to leverage the interest generated by the Egyptian star’s arrival.

The transfer negotiations for Salah progressed rapidly once official contact was established, according to Dogan. He mentioned that Trabzonspor had been interested in signing Salah since the World Cup, but had to wait for other clubs to conclude their discussions. The final negotiations reportedly took about five to six days to complete, beginning with a Zoom meeting while Salah was on holiday in Mykonos.

Salah’s first appearance for Trabzonspor was in Istanbul, where he came off the bench in the second half against Kasimpasa. His first match at the team’s home stadium in Trabzon is highly anticipated by fans.
