Mudryk makes emotional return in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Juventus

Reaction as Mudryk makes return in Chelsea loss to Juventus - after Man City win

Mykhailo Mudryk made his return to the pitch for Chelsea after a doping ban, featuring in the team’s 1-0 friendly defeat against Juventus in Hong Kong. The Ukrainian international entered the match as a substitute in the 82nd minute, marking his first appearance for the club in nearly two years. His return was met with applause from teammates and cheers from the 43,575 fans at Kai Tak Stadium.

Manager Xabi Alonso described Mudryk’s return as “emotional” for both the player and the club. Mudryk had been sidelined since November 2024 due to a doping ban but received permission to resume his career after a successful appeal. Despite a lively performance on the left wing, he was unable to prevent Juventus from securing the win.

Match Details and Key Performances

The sole goal of the match came in the 68th minute from Kosovo international Edon Zhegrova. Kenan Yildiz set up Zhegrova, who curled a strike into the top corner from outside the box. This goal proved to be the difference in a game that saw limited clear-cut chances from both sides, particularly in the first half.

Chelsea‘s new signing, Danny Welbeck, started the match but was unable to convert an early opportunity, failing to direct a header on target after 11 minutes. Juventus also had a chance before halftime, with midfielder Jeremie Boga forcing a save from Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

In the second half, Chelsea captain Moises Caicedo provided a long ball to Marco Palestra, whose shot was saved by Mattia Perin. The match saw numerous substitutions from both teams, which impacted the flow of play. Alonso noted that the game became less controlled and stable after the changes.

Alonso commented on the team’s performance, stating that they started well in the first 30 to 35 minutes with good control and created some chances. He acknowledged the team’s inability to secure a win but emphasized the importance of the match for gaining minutes for all players as part of the pre-season process.

Team Combinations and Player Insights

Chelsea‘s attacking combinations saw Danny Welbeck working alongside Joao Pedro, a former teammate from Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion. However, their link-up play was infrequent after an initial interaction. The right flank showed more promise, with Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda rotating effectively in Alonso‘s 3-2-4-1 possession shape. Quenda, making his debut, displayed technical sharpness and effective crossing ability.

Conversely, Jamie Gittens on the left side received less support, with Jorrel Hato being less inclined to push forward. This left Gittens with more individual effort required to bypass defenders and create opportunities. Chelsea‘s left side was noted to be less active in possession during the first half.

Midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, a product of Chelsea‘s academy, started the match and impressed with his physical presence and work in counter-pressing. Playing alongside captain Moises Caicedo, Nicoll-Jazuli showed assurance despite his youth, contributing to stifling Juventus‘s play and participating in the build-up phase under pressure.

Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill were not part of the matchday squad. Alonso indicated that Palmer experienced discomfort after a knock in a previous match against Tottenham in Sydney, but clarified it was not a recurrence of a groin injury. Palmer is expected to be available for the next friendly.

Upcoming Fixtures

Chelsea is scheduled to play AC Milan in Jakarta on Saturday. Following this, they will conclude their pre-season with matches against Malaysia‘s Johor Darul Ta’zim and Spain‘s Real Sociedad. Their opening league game will be against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.

Juventus will travel to Australia for friendlies against Inter Milan and Palermo before starting their Serie A season with an away match against Frosinone on August 23.
