Norwich City ends Sheffield United’s unbeaten start with 3-1 victory

Norwich City secured a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, bringing an end to the Blades’ undefeated run in the Championship season. Goals from Anthony Musaba, Mohamed Toure, and Mathias Kvistgaarden sealed the win for the Canaries, marking their first away league triumph of the season.
Sheffield United’s Patrick Bamford, celebrating his 33rd birthday, scored to level the match in the first half after Musaba had opened the scoring. However, the home side, managed by Chris Wilder, found little else to celebrate as they dropped to 14th in the league standings.
First Half Action
Norwich City, under the management of Philippe Clement, started strongly despite having opened their campaign with two defeats from their initial two matches. The Canaries took an early lead in the eighth minute when winger Anthony Musaba struck from the edge of the box. His shot, which clipped the crossbar before crossing the line, was too powerful for Blades goalkeeper Michael Cooper to fully control.
Sheffield United thought they had equalised when debutant Liam Kitching headed in from a corner, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul on Norwich keeper Vladan Kovacecic. Patrick Bamford eventually brought the Blades level in the 23rd minute with a powerful finish from just outside the area, assisted by Tyrese Campbell.
Both teams created further opportunities in a dynamic first 45 minutes. Norwich regained their lead just before halftime when Mohamed Toure converted a one-on-one chance against Cooper, shortly after former Blade Andre Brooks had been denied an opportunity.
Second Half and Manager Reactions
The second half saw Cooper make a good save from Musaba early on, while Sheffield United substitute Kalvin Phillips fired wide from outside the box, keeping the game finely poised. Norwich extended their lead in the 62nd minute through another substitute, Mathias Kvistgaarden. He slotted home a rebound after Hamza Choudhury had blocked an effort from Brooks on the goal line, securing a two-goal cushion for the visitors.
Sheffield United struggled to mount a comeback, with their attack appearing lacklustre. Bamford had another chance late in the game after being sent through by Oliver Arblaster, but Norwich defenders managed to disrupt his effort. The defeat marked Sheffield United’s first of the season across all competitions.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed his disappointment with the goals conceded, particularly highlighting the second goal as a turning point. He told BBC Radio Sheffield that his team did not deserve to win, stating, “The three goals that we have conceded, I thought the second goal really changed the flow of the game.” Wilder also noted that his team “felt sorry for ourselves” in the final 20 minutes, making it “pretty comfortable for Norwich.”
Norwich City boss Philippe Clement praised his team’s performance, especially after recent matches where he felt they were unlucky. Speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk, Clement said, “It was important to keep our level and raise our level.” He added that he was proud of how his team maintained possession, created numerous chances in an away game, and scored “three really good goals” against a strong opponent. Clement also commended Andre Brooks for his performance against his former club, noting the emotional difficulty for a young player in such a situation.
Prior to this fixture, Sheffield United had a record of two wins, three draws, and no defeats in their last five matches, including a 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers on September 1. Norwich City’s recent form was more mixed, with one win, one draw, and three defeats from their last five outings, including a 4-1 win over Burnley but also a 1-0 loss to Stoke City on September 1.
The match kicked off on September 5, 2026.
