Super Eagles’ Terem Moffi completes move to German club Hamburger SV

Moffi joins Hamburger SV
Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has finalised his transfer to German Bundesliga side Hamburger SV. The club officially confirmed the signing of the Nigerian player on Monday. Moffi arrives at HSV from French Ligue 1 club OGC Nice.
His move was completed after he underwent mandatory medical examinations at the Athleticum at Volkspark last weekend. He has since signed his contract with the German club. Moffi will wear the number 9 shirt for his new team, marking another stage in his European football journey.
Kathleen Krüger, HSV’s sporting director, expressed confidence that Moffi’s experience and adaptability will enhance the club’s attacking options. Krüger stated that Moffi’s commitment broadens and diversifies their central attacking capabilities, thereby improving their overall quality. She also noted that Moffi’s career path has provided him with significant international experience, which he can share with younger talents at the club.
Claus Costa, another sports director at HSV, also highlighted Moffi’s physical attributes and versatility in attack. Costa described Moffi as a striker who is challenging to contain due to his physique, determination, and playing style. He added that Moffi can exploit defensive depth, possesses a strong presence in the penalty area, and demonstrates quality when playing with his back to goal. Costa believes Moffi will provide additional impact and flexibility to the team’s play, and emphasised the importance of quickly integrating him to ensure a strong start to the new Bundesliga season.
Moffi’s extensive European career
At 27, Moffi has already established an extensive professional career across Europe, with Germany becoming the seventh country where he has played. Born in Calabar, Nigeria, in May 1999, Moffi relocated to England at 17 to attend the Buckswood Football Academy before starting his professional career in Lithuania.
His early professional clubs included FK Kauno Zalgiris and FK Riteriai. In January 2020, he moved to Belgium to join KV Kortrijk, and later that year, he transferred to France with FC Lorient. His performances at Lorient led to a move to OGC Nice in early 2023. He also spent the latter half of last season on loan with Portuguese club FC Porto.
Across these clubs, Moffi has accumulated 88 goals and 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances. He has also been a Nigerian international since 2021, making 23 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring six goals and providing two assists.
Moffi’s perspective on the move
Moffi indicated that discussions with the coach were a significant factor in his decision to join HSV. He also cited the club’s standing and history as appealing aspects. He mentioned that when he informed his father about HSV’s interest, his father immediately recognised the club and showed great anticipation, which Moffi described as a positive experience.
He also shared his expectations for his role at HSV, stating that while scoring goals is a primary objective, he is equally committed to contributing to the team’s collective effort. Moffi expressed his enthusiasm to meet his new teammates and begin working with them.
The transfer concludes a period of negotiations, with reports indicating that Hamburg and Nice had reached an agreement for the deal. Moffi had reportedly agreed personal terms with Hamburg, with one report suggesting a deal worth approximately €2.500 million over three years, including bonuses. His medical examination was the final step before the completion of the transfer.
Moffi’s time at Nice saw him score 24 goals in 72 appearances over two years. Despite winning a title during his loan spell at Porto, where he scored twice in 15 appearances, the club did not activate his €8 million buy-option. HSV is now preparing for the new Bundesliga season, and Moffi is expected to contribute his goal-scoring ability, physical presence, and experience to the team’s efforts.
Moffi’s move to Hamburg could also offer him an opportunity to further solidify his position within the Super Eagles squad, providing him with consistent playing time in a new league and country.
