Aston Villa agrees deal for Alejandro Garnacho on loan from Chelsea

Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign winger Alejandro Garnacho on a loan deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy. This arrangement follows Chelsea’s acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a reported £117m, making him the most expensive British footballer in history.
The transfer of Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United last summer for £40m, is structured to meet Chelsea’s valuation, including the loan fee. The conditions for the permanent transfer are considered easily achievable.
Financial Regulations and Transfer Structures
Both Chelsea and Aston Villa have faced fines from UEFA for breaching financial sustainability regulations. Chelsea was fined £2.6m, with a portion potentially written off if they reduce expenditure or increase revenue. The club’s financial position has reportedly improved since last summer, when they incurred a £26.7m fine and entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA.
Chelsea sold approximately £300m worth of players last season and expects to generate a similar amount this season. They have already raised over £120m through player sales this period. Despite this, the club’s most recent accounts for 2024-25 showed a reported loss of £262m within the club’s companies and £701m at the parent-company level, contributing to liabilities exceeding £1bn.
The structure of the Garnacho deal is influenced by UEFA’s rules on player exchange transactions. If multiple deals between two clubs occur within a 45-day period, they can be considered a swap. If the Garnacho and Rogers transfers were deemed a single player exchange, Aston Villa’s accounting profit from the Rogers sale would be reduced by UEFA’s calculations.
A loan with a conditional obligation to buy, particularly if the condition is virtually certain, could still be interpreted by UEFA as a permanent transfer from the start of the loan agreement, potentially classifying it as a player exchange. Football finance experts indicate that UEFA is actively working to prevent convenient player swaps that allow clubs to book profits and comply with regulations.
Squad Management and Player Profiles
After signing Rogers, Chelsea reportedly has 38 senior players on its books, even before further potential arrivals. The club is exploring defensive options and is in talks for other signings. To manage their large squad, further player sales are anticipated. Players like Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, and Marc Guiu are reportedly available for transfer, while Mamadou Sarr is expected to go out on loan.
A core group of players, including Moises Caicedo, Estevao Willian, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Levi Colwill, along with highly-rated young prospects such as Josh Acheampong, are considered untouchable. Chelsea did not qualify for European competition this season.
For Aston Villa, the loan deal for Garnacho provides control and could reduce immediate costs. The club has previously used similar loan-to-buy arrangements successfully. Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s manager, reportedly admires Garnacho. However, Garnacho’s first season at Chelsea saw him make 25 appearances in the Premier League, averaging less than 49 minutes per game, with five goal involvements.
Analysis suggests that if Garnacho joins Aston Villa, it might require adjustments to Emery’s system. While players like Rogers and Emiliano Buendia have shown versatility across flanks and a tendency to move inside, Garnacho typically operates wide and hugs the touchline. He previously scored a goal in the FA Cup final for Manchester United while playing from the right flank.
Garnacho did not report for pre-season training at Chelsea to facilitate his move.

The deal for Garnacho was agreed on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
