Chelsea secures Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa; Arsenal considers options

Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal eye Diomande; Rogers medical; Man Utd deal - London Evening Standard

Chelsea signs Morgan Rogers

Chelsea has reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers. The deal is valued at £117million. Rogers is expected to undergo a medical examination on Monday. This move means Arsenal, who had identified Rogers as a primary transfer target, will now need to explore other options.

Rogers, a versatile attacking midfielder, is currently with the England squad at the World Cup. He was anticipated to leave Villa this summer. Reports indicate that Chelsea has been a long-time admirer of Rogers and acted quickly to secure his transfer, preventing Arsenal from acquiring him.

The transfer fee for Rogers is noted to set a new record for an English player, surpassing a previous fee for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Transfer market activity continues

Following the acquisition of Rogers, Aston Villa has reportedly already identified a replacement. Johan Manzambi, who joined Villa last week, is seen as a direct replacement for Rogers. The income from Rogers’ transfer is also expected to assist Villa in complying with financial regulations.

In other transfer news, Julian Alvarez remains a player of interest for Arsenal. However, securing a deal for the Argentina striker is considered challenging, particularly given his reported preference to remain in Spain and his desire to join Barcelona. Atletico Madrid, Alvarez’s current club, is reportedly unwilling to sell him to a rival team. Arsenal sees a potential opportunity if Alvarez seeks to leave his current club.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated that an update on their pursuit of Julian Alvarez will be provided after the World Cup, claiming that the club has submitted a competitive bid for the player.

The transfer of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea could also lead to other movements. Nicolas Jackson, a striker for Chelsea, was mentioned during negotiations with Villa. Villa is reportedly interested in reuniting Jackson with his former manager at Villarreal, Unai Emery.

Elsewhere, Roma has submitted an initial offer for Crysencio Summerville. However, the offer was rejected as his current club is reportedly holding out for a higher fee. Roma is expected to make a second offer, with the player reportedly keen on the move.

Manchester United has indicated no interest in selling Amad Diallo this summer, despite links to other clubs. The club is prepared to fend off transfer interest to keep the Ivorian forward.

Tottenham has reportedly spent over £200million this summer, more than any other club in the top flight. They remain interested in further reinforcements but have rejected an offer from Newcastle for Lucas Bergvall. Liverpool has secured Dominik Szoboszlai with a new contract and is targeting new forward signings, with links to Bradley Barcola.

Additional player movements and interests

Arsenal is also considering RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as a potential option, while continuing to monitor Julian Alvarez. Interest also remains in Bruno Guimaraes, and a deal for Christos Tzolis is anticipated to be announced in the coming days.

Ezri Konsa has been linked with a move to Arsenal as they seek cover for William Saliba, who could miss a significant portion of the season due to a back fracture.

Manchester United remains active in the midfield market, having already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. They have made contact regarding Hugo Larsson and are preparing a bid for Manu Kone.

Chelsea’s active transfer window continues as they consider a loan move for Mamadou Sarr and have been informed of the cost to sign Maxence Lacroix.

Juventus is reportedly pushing to sign Folarin Balogun this summer following his performance in the World Cup. Monaco has placed a price tag on Balogun amidst interest from Dortmund and Sunderland.

Ilaix Moriba has been offered to several clubs, including Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Hull. He could be available for a reported fee.

Bayern Munich has given Joao Palhinha additional time before he needs to return to the club, with Aston Villa reportedly interested in the player. Tottenham is also interested in signing Crysencio Summerville from West Ham.

Juventus has offered a sum for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but Villa is seeking a higher amount.

The first friendly match of the summer for Manchester United may have presented a cost-saving opportunity. Patrick Dorgu impressed playing on the left wing in a match against Wrexham, potentially reducing the need to sign another winger. Dorgu expressed his enjoyment of the new role, stating he found it good to play higher up with more freedom.

Enzo Fernandez’s performances at the World Cup have reportedly validated his price tag. Chelsea has not yet received a formal approach for his services. Fernandez has scored twice in six appearances in the tournament and is expected to start in the final this evening.

Mohamed Salah is set to continue his career in Turkey, with the forward expected to sign for Besiktas. Manchester United is also reportedly looking at Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest, who can play on either flank.

Real Madrid is interested in Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, who is reportedly tempted by a move to the Bernabeu. Tottenham’s summer spending spree may lead to some players leaving, with Cristian Romero potentially among them.

Manchester United and Newcastle United are interested in Eintracht Frankfurt’s midfielder Hugo Larsson, but neither club has made an offer yet. Arsenal remains interested in Bradley Barcola, but there has been no club-to-club contact with PSG.

Rogers scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 55 appearances for Villa last season.

Since joining from Middlesbrough in a deal worth £16m in 2024, Rogers has become an England international, with 21 caps. He made five of those appearances during the 2026 World Cup and assisted Anthony Gordon’s goal during England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina.

Rogers signed a new contract with Aston Villa in November, running until 2031.

Approximately 45 percent of Rogers’ Premier League minutes for Villa last season were played as a left winger.

Rogers also played as a right winger in England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, where he assisted Anthony Gordon’s goal.

The transfer window is well underway, with clubs actively pursuing their targets.
