Hull City defeats Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League opener

Hull City secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture, marking their first top-flight win against United and their first league win against them since 1974. The match saw Hull score both goals in the first half, with Semi Ajayi finding the net in the 17th minute and Nobel Mendy adding a second in the 38th minute.
This defeat was Manchester United’s first opening-day loss to a newly promoted side in their history. Hull City, returning to the Premier League after a nine-year absence, delivered a significant upset against one of England’s prominent clubs.
Match Analysis and Reactions
Former United striker Wayne Rooney noted that Manchester United did not create many opportunities, which he considered a major concern. He suggested that the team did not appear ready for the intensity of the game against a promoted side on the opening day of the season.
Another perspective came from former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who suggested a fitness issue might have contributed to United’s performance. He observed that the team did not look fit enough to sustain 90 minutes of high-pressure, high-energy football.
However, Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s manager, dismissed the idea of a fitness problem, citing the team’s pre-season performance. He noted that six of his starting line-up returned to training on 9 July and that fitness had not been questioned until a recent defeat by AC Milan.
Carrick acknowledged that opinions would vary regarding the team’s performance, including observations that United’s attack lacked potency, even after Marcus Rashford’s introduction at half-time for his first appearance since December 2024. Concerns were also raised about United’s defensive solidity against opponents using wing-backs, a tactic employed by both AC Milan and Hull City.
Bruno Fernandes, United’s skipper, identified pressing as a key issue, stating that the team made similar mistakes to those in away games last season. He highlighted that Hull’s goalkeeper had more touches on the ball in the first 20 minutes, indicating a lack of aggressive pressing from United. Fernandes also stressed the need to improve on set-pieces.
Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic confirmed that set-pieces were an area his team specifically targeted in preparation for the match. The strategic focus paid off for Hull City, contributing to their unexpected victory.
Looking Ahead for Manchester United
Despite the disappointing start, Carrick maintained a calm public demeanor, stating that the defeat was “just one game” and that the team would absorb it and come back stronger. He emphasized that his outward calmness did not reflect a lack of internal disappointment.
Carrick also addressed external pressures, acknowledging the responsibility he holds and the questions that arise after a loss. He affirmed that the defeat would not alter his approach or lead to significant changes in the team’s direction. The recent agreement for the £70m transfer of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba was mentioned as a move not influenced by the opening game’s outcome.
Manchester United is scheduled to play their next match against another newly promoted opponent, Ipswich, at Old Trafford on 30 August.
Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi’s goal for Hull City was part of a mixed start for Nigerian players in the new season. Ola Aina featured in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 home defeat to Leeds United, while Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi experienced a 3-0 loss with Coventry City against Arsenal.

Other Nigerian players expected to feature in the opening weekend include Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for Fulham against Chelsea, and Benjamin Fredrick for Brentford against Tottenham Hotspur. Additionally, teenage winger Zadok Yohanna, who joined Brighton from AIK Stockholm on a five-year contract, is attracting attention as Brighton prepares for their opening fixture against Aston Villa.
