Lionel Messi fined for slapping opponent in MLS match

Lionel Messi: Inter Miami star fined for slapping opponent in MLS game

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has received a fine following an incident during his side’s 2-2 draw against Philadelphia Union on Wednesday. The incident involved Messi slapping Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan around the back of the head late in the Major League Soccer (MLS) game.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee confirmed the fine, though the specific amount was not disclosed. The league stated that Messi violated its policy regarding contact to an opponent’s face, head, or neck. The event occurred in the 101st minute of the match, which took place at Subaru Park.

Matchday Incidents and Disciplinary Actions

Reports indicate that Messi’s action stemmed from his belief that Sullivan had elbowed him after he had played the ball. The referee intervened swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating further. This was not the only disciplinary action taken during the contentious match.

Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined by the MLS for his involvement in a separate clash with Sullivan. Fray reportedly grabbed Sullivan’s neck after both players became entangled when Sullivan lost his footing inside the penalty area. The match was marked by a heated atmosphere, culminating in two red cards issued in stoppage time.

Miami‘s Yannick Bright and Sullivan’s brother, Cavan Sullivan, were both dismissed from the game. However, Cavan Sullivan’s one-game suspension has since been rescinded after a review by the Independent Review Panel. This panel, comprising representatives from US Soccer, Canada Soccer, and an independent nominee from the Professional Referee Organization, unanimously voted in Sullivan’s favour regarding the incident that occurred in the 102nd minute.

As a result of the rescinded suspension, Cavan Sullivan is now eligible to participate in the Union‘s upcoming match against Austin FC on Saturday. Each MLS club is permitted two unsuccessful appeals per season, including during the league playoffs. Philadelphia’s successful appeal means they still retain two unsuccessful appeals for the 2026 season.

Messi’s Return and Team Standings

Messi’s appearance in the match followed his return to Miami after attending his father’s funeral in Argentina. His father, Jorge Messi, who also served as his agent, passed away at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness. In a tribute to his late father, Messi had suggested that his playing career might not continue for an extended period.

During the match against Philadelphia Union, Messi scored Miami‘s second goal, marking his first goal since his father’s passing. Despite the draw, Inter Miami currently holds the second position in the Eastern Conference standings. They are trailing leaders Nashville by seven points.

Other disciplinary actions across the league on Wednesday included Toronto FC defender Walker Zimmerman being fined for not leaving the field promptly after receiving a red card in a 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC. Additionally, Minnesota United FC defender Anthony Markanich was fined for violating the league’s policy on simulation or embellishment during a 2-1 loss to Atlanta United.
