John Obi Mikel suggests Chelsea should target James Trafford to replace Robert Sanchez

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged the club to seek an upgrade for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, suggesting Manchester City‘s James Trafford as a potential transfer target. Mikel expressed his views on The Obi One Podcast, stating that Sanchez is not the goalkeeper who can help Chelsea secure trophies.
Mikel highlighted that the need for a new goalkeeper is a sentiment shared by many Chelsea fans. He questioned why the club has not addressed the goalkeeping situation despite making other significant signings this summer. The former midfielder believes that consistency and reliability are crucial for a winning team, qualities he feels Sanchez lacks.
“I’ve said it so many times that Sanchez is not that guy. He is not that guy that will win us trophies,” Obi Mikel stated. He added that Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s new manager, and the club itself are likely aware of this issue. Mikel emphasised that while Chelsea is building a strong squad with new players, the goalkeeper position remains a critical area needing improvement.
Sanchez has been with Chelsea for three years, and his tenure has been marked by what Mikel described as numerous mistakes. Mikel believes that for Chelsea to transition from their current position to a trophy-winning team, they require a more consistent and reliable presence in goal. He pointed to a lack of experience and consistency as key issues for the team last season, alongside disciplinary problems.
Trafford identified as potential target
Obi Mikel specifically named James Trafford of Manchester City as a suitable candidate for Chelsea. He noted that Trafford is currently available and that other clubs, including Leeds United, are reportedly pursuing him. Leeds United is said to be close to signing Trafford, having already agreed to personal terms with the player.
Trafford’s path to regular playing time at Manchester City was reportedly hindered by the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Mikel suggested that Chelsea should attempt to intercept Leeds’ move for the 23-year-old England international. He praised Trafford’s abilities, describing him as “talented,” “good with his feet,” and a “very, very good shot-stopper.”
Mikel highlighted Trafford’s desire to play regularly, which could make a move to Chelsea appealing. He reiterated his call for Chelsea to “go and get him,” stressing that Trafford is a young, English goalkeeper with significant potential. The former Blue’s comments underscore a perceived urgency to resolve Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation as the club continues its summer transfer activities.
Chelsea has been active in the transfer market under new manager Xabi Alonso, shifting away from a purely youth-focused policy. The club secured Morgan Rogers in a substantial transfer and has also brought in experienced players like Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, who collectively boast nearly 1,000 Premier League appearances. Additionally, the arrival of left-back Pep Chavarria from Racing Santander is anticipated following Marc Cucurella‘s departure to Real Madrid.

Squad reinforcements and ongoing transfers
The club’s recent transfer activities indicate a strategic shift towards strengthening the squad with both established talent and promising prospects. The acquisition of players like Rogers, Welbeck, and Henderson suggests a focus on improving the team’s overall quality and experience. However, the goalkeeping position, according to Mikel, remains an unaddressed concern that could impact the team’s ambitions for trophies.
The ongoing transfer window has seen Chelsea make several moves to bolster their roster across various positions. The reported completion of Jordan Henderson‘s deal and the impending arrival of Pep Chavarria demonstrate the club’s commitment to squad reinforcement. Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah‘s move to Como is also reportedly progressing.
Despite these developments, the focus on the goalkeeper position continues to be a point of discussion among former players and fans. Mikel’s strong stance on Sanchez’s suitability for a trophy-winning team underscores the importance of this role in Chelsea’s aspirations for the upcoming season. The club’s transfer strategy under Xabi Alonso appears to be comprehensive, but the goalkeeping situation remains a key area of debate.
The summer transfer window has seen Chelsea make significant investments, including a reported £117 million for Morgan Rogers.
