Liverpool secures 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Iraola’s debut match

Liverpool 4-2 Sunderland: Andoni Iraola makes winning start to life as Reds head coach

Andoni Iraola began his tenure as Liverpool head coach with a 4-2 victory against Sunderland in their opening match of the summer tour of the US. The game, held in Nashville, saw goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas. Despite the win, the match was marked by an early injury to defender Joe Gomez.

The match took place at GEODIS Park in Nashville, with Liverpool overcoming a deficit to secure the win. Iraola, who took over from Arne Slot in June, expressed satisfaction with parts of the team’s performance, particularly the build-up play for the opening goal.

Match Overview and Key Moments

Liverpool‘s first goal under Iraola came in the 13th minute from Kieran Morrison, following a team move involving McConnell, Ngumoha, and Elliott. Morrison, who scored his first senior goal for the club, expressed pride in the achievement and highlighted the new philosophy under Iraola.

Sunderland equalized in the 28th minute through Le Fee after McConnell lost possession. Sunderland then took the lead in the 49th minute with a goal from Tuterov, following a turnover by Frimpong.

However, Liverpool responded with a powerful strike from Dominik Szoboszlai in the 56th minute, leveling the score after an attack involving Koumas and Kerkez. Szoboszlai‘s goal was described as a “worldie” and marked a strong start to his pre-season, having recently committed his future to the club with a five-year contract. He was heavily involved in the team’s attacking play, including forcing a turnover that led to a later goal.

Federico Chiesa put Liverpool back in front in the 72nd minute, converting from a tight angle after being set up by Ramsey. Lewis Koumas then sealed the victory in the 85th minute with a confident finish, assisted by Szoboszlai, after Sunderland conceded possession.

Injury Concerns and Squad Depth

A significant concern for Liverpool was the early injury to Joe Gomez, who was forced off after just eight minutes with what appeared to be a muscle issue. Iraola described this as “the worst news,” especially given the team’s defensive situation. Gomez, who has a history of injuries, was replaced by youngster Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

The injury to Gomez highlighted potential depth issues in defense. Virgil van Dijk was absent due to his World Cup break, while Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury sustained last September, and new signing Jeremy Jacquet missed the game as a precaution due to a shoulder issue. Ndukwe, an 18-year-old, formed a defensive partnership with fellow 18-year-old Mor Talla Ndiaye, both of whom joined Liverpool in January.

Iraola utilized 22 players during the match, providing opportunities for several young talents. James McConnell, Trey Nyoni, Kieran Morrison, and Lewis Koumas were among the young players who made an impact. Morrison, who signed a four-year contract in May, opened the scoring, while Koumas, returning from a loan spell with Hull City, contributed to Szoboszlai‘s goal and scored one himself.

Coaching Philosophy and Upcoming Matches

Iraola‘s coaching style was evident, with the team displaying a higher tempo and more direct attacking play. He set up the team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, using Harvey Elliott and later Szoboszlai in the advanced central midfield role. Iraola emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We still have a lot of things to improve.”

The squad returned to their training base in Chicago after the match, where they were greeted by players returning from their World Cup break, including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Ryan Gravenberch. Liverpool‘s next pre-season fixture is against Wrexham in New York on July 30.

Sunderland also has upcoming matches, including a game against Leeds in New Jersey on July 31.
