Mikel Merino: Spain’s World Cup ‘super sub’ making headlines

Mikel Merino, the Arsenal midfielder, has emerged as a key player for Spain in the World Cup, scoring decisive goals in consecutive knockout matches. His contributions have helped Spain reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
Merino scored in the 88th minute against Belgium, just 117 seconds after entering the game as a substitute. This followed his late winning goal as a substitute against Portugal in the previous round. He is reportedly the first player in World Cup history to score winning goals in separate knockout ties after coming off the bench.
Overcoming Injury Setback
Merino’s impact is particularly notable given his recent injury. He suffered a stress fracture in his foot in January, which left his participation in the World Cup in doubt. The injury meant he was unable to walk for two months and required a mobility scooter for movement. He returned to training in May, just a month before the tournament began.
During his recovery, Merino stated, “I had two options, to go down and cry myself into extinction, or keep my head up, be positive and use my time to improve other aspects.” His rapid recovery and subsequent performance on the field highlight his work ethic and character.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who has worked with Merino since his youth team days, praised the midfielder. “He’s world-class. I want to emphasise the importance of the players who come off the bench. Mikel never disappoints. He’s a safe bet,” de la Fuente said.
Consistent Impact for Club and Country
Merino’s ability to deliver in crucial moments is not new. Two years ago, at the European Championship, his headed goal in extra-time against Germany allowed Spain to advance and eventually defeat England in the final. He has also been a decisive player for Arsenal.
For Arsenal, Merino has transitioned from a midfielder to a centre-forward, and everything in between. He has scored against teams such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Newcastle. All but one of his Premier League goals for the Gunners have either equalized or put his team ahead in matches.
This consistent performance has earned him high regard from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and the same level of trust from Spain’s de la Fuente. Former England striker Wayne Rooney noted on Match of the Day that Merino “is just one of those players who arrives at the right time, at the right moment in big games.”
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
Spain’s victory over Belgium, with Merino’s decisive goal, has set up a semi-final clash against France. This match will also feature a highly anticipated showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Spain’s young star, Lamine Yamal.
While Merino has been a consistent hero, Yamal has yet to fully replicate his Euro 2024 form at this World Cup. He has scored one goal in six games. Despite this, his dribbling and pace are noted for creating space for teammates. Former Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta believes Yamal has more to offer, stating, “He wants to create the difference. He is always moving, so I think he has more to give to the team and now is the right time.”
Spain’s defense has been strong, conceding only one goal in the tournament so far, but they face a significant test against a high-scoring French side led by Mbappe. The upcoming semi-final against France will determine who advances to the final.
