CAF President Reflects on African Performance

The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, held a press conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday, 22 July. During the conference, Dr. Motsepe reflected on Africa’s performance at the recent FIFA World Cup 2026 and discussed other developments in CAF and African football.

Dr. Motsepe expressed disappointment regarding the absence of Nigeria and Cameroon from the tournament, stating that the global event felt incomplete without these two traditional African football powerhouses. Both nations did not qualify for the expanded tournament, which was hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where Spain was eventually crowned champions.

He noted that Nigeria and Cameroon have historically enhanced Africa’s reputation through memorable performances at previous World Cups. Cameroon was the first African country to reach the quarter-finals in 1990, while Nigeria has consistently advanced to the Round of 16.

Despite the disappointment of their absence, Dr. Motsepe conveyed confidence in the future of African football. He affirmed CAF’s commitment to assisting more countries in consistently competing at the highest level. This includes continued investment in youth development, coaching, infrastructure, and competitions to strengthen football across the continent.

Dr. Motsepe acknowledged that significant progress requires patience but expressed optimism that sustained commitment would lead to long-term success. He stated that one of CAF’s long-term goals is to see an African nation win the FIFA World Cup. While recognising the performances of countries like Morocco and Egypt at the 2026 tournament, he maintained that African football is at its strongest when traditional giants such as Nigeria and Cameroon are present on the world stage.
