Trump presents World Cup trophy to Spain after final victory over Argentina

United States President Donald Trump presented the World Cup trophy to Spain following their victory in the final match against Argentina. The game, held in East Rutherford, New Jersey, concluded with Spain securing a 1-0 win over the defending champions. Trump, who attended the match with First Lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, viewed the tournament as a success for the United States.

Trump remarked on Friday at a FIFA reception in New York City that the tournament demonstrated the United States as a “soccer country” and had brought the world together. He had previously stated that the 2026 World Cup was potentially the most successful sporting event in history. His son, Barron, is reportedly a significant fan of the sport.

Presidential Involvement and Diplomacy

The final marked Trump’s first attendance at a World Cup fixture. His involvement in the tournament included a controversial phone call to Infantino earlier in the month, requesting a review of a red card issued to USA striker Folarin Balogun during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The red card was subsequently reversed, allowing Balogun to play in the following match against Belgium, which the USA lost 4-1.

The event also served as a platform for diplomacy, with leaders from co-hosting nations Mexico and Canada, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in attendance. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, as well as Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, were also present despite recent tensions between Trump and Madrid regarding NATO spending and the Iran war. Argentine President Javier Milei, however, did not attend.

Security measures were heightened around the stadium for Trump’s arrival, including a no-fly zone. He flew in from his New Jersey golf club via Marine One. Trump had previously hosted Infantino at the Oval Office on multiple occasions since returning to office in January 2025.

Tournament Logistics and Future Hosting Bids

The White House navigated various logistical challenges in hosting the tournament, including concerns from human rights groups and backlash over ticket prices. There were also discussions regarding the administration’s immigration policies, which had barred fans from some qualifier countries. Despite these issues, the tournament largely proceeded smoothly, with many fans from around the world reportedly enjoying US culture.

Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, noted that the administration invested billions in federal funding to ensure the World Cup was a safe, secure, and integrity-filled event. He highlighted that the focus shifted from initial concerns to the cultural moments and athletic feats on the pitch.

Trump has expressed interest in the United States hosting the World Cup again in the future, suggesting a bid for another tournament soon. The United States is also set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Additionally, the US is largely expected to be awarded the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

At a FIFA Club World Cup championship held at the same New Jersey stadium last year, Chelsea players were reportedly confused after Trump remained on the podium while they celebrated after receiving their trophy. Trump later claimed he was allowed to keep the trophy in the Oval Office, but FIFA clarified it was a replica. On Friday, Trump jokingly suggested a future World Cup co-hosted by the United States and China, excluding Mexico and Canada.

During the final, Trump received a close look at the World Cup trophy in his box seat during the first half. Video footage showed him smiling and patting the gold trophy as it was held up to him.
